After running for 10 years of game time and over three years of real time, the Abingdon Wargames Club 1066 Campaign came to an end last year.
The campaign utilised a slightly modified version of the Wargames Research Group's popular and simple De Bellis Antiquitatis fast play rules for ancient wargames. These had the advantage that we could generally guarantee that campaign battles could be fought in an evening (even if George was one of the combatants!). Over the three years of the campaign over twenty different players, representing twelve different political blocks, wrestled to control the destiny of Anglo-Saxon England.
The campaign began on January 5th 1066, when King Edward 'the Confessor' of England died at Westminster without an heir, and continued until it was clear who was the undisputed ruler of the Kingdom of England. And the winner was:
Arnulf, Count of Flanders
So congratulations to Mike Watkins, who played Count Arnulf (and an honourable mention to Nick Butler-Miles who, as Count Baldwin, played Flanders from 1066-1069). My many thanks to all who played in the campaign and made it what it was; I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
